Creating Ideas: Current Market

While trying to come up with a new concept for a game I often feel like I am just stealing ideas from other sources. The creation of Mine Craft for example sparked a massive flood of games that have a similar idea and concept of destroying the environment brick by brick while trying to survive the random roaming enemies. Examples of Minecraft.

With the creation of Castle Wolfenstein (1981), the gaming crowd saw something completely new. Maybe the controls were clunky - but it was revolutionary. There were games previous to this that had a first person view, but this changed everything. It put you in the perspective of a solider on his fight to win World War II, with you holding the gun and aiming down the barrel at the enemies.
This created a similar situation where games looked exactly the same with a pallet swap.
